What Is Claude Design? Seven Levels of AI Design

Everyone who calls artificial intelligence "design me a beautiful website" gets the same thing: the purple graphian, the mediumed title, the three columned property box. The problem is not the lack of talent of the model; it's the same as everyone else's input. I'm taking Claude Design to seven levels in this article. I'm taking what you get at every level, what mistake is keeping you there, and what mistake is keeping you there to get on top.

What is Claude Design?

Claude Design is Claude's design workspace. Instead of asking for code in the chat window to visualize the output, he offers an interface where you can see the design directly and talk about it. Web site, interface draft, poster, presentation, HTML e-mail, moving graphics are all coming out of the same place.

What's critical is that he can create a design system, and he can fit every next production into that system, and all of the following levels revolve around this single idea.

Level 1: Connect and execute

At this level, you give a one-word request: "Design interfaces to a toy bear-selling brand." The vehicle asks you a few questions (target mass, desktop or mobile name), and then produces a result.

The result is not bad, but it has no character, and it's important to see the error here: "Everyone who uses the same system and the same prompt gets the same print.** If you don't give clarity, it's the exact expected result.

However, don't underestimate this level. Most of the simple advertising sites sold for hundreds of dollars in the Freelance market are exactly this quality. Even level 1 gives you serious time and money.

"To get to one base, admit that the reason the output is creditable is because it's in.

Level two: to give you a pair like the design director.

At this level, two things change: "You're holding a referendum " and you're not ending it at once.

The reference is that you take a screenshot of a design that you like and you say, "Pinterest, Awwwards, Mobbin, Godly, Landbook. The difference is not small, but it doesn't look like the same prompt came out of the same vehicle.

The second part is iteration. Instead of accepting the first output, you go to it: "When the buttons are selected, let the confetti come out," "let the top band of each screen be different color," "raise the contrast between black and blue." Five ten rounds is normal.

"The rule of this level: Don't try to finish it in one shot. Guide it, then correct it.

The limit: you do every single job, not slow and repetitive.

Level 3: Building a design system

If you don't have a design system, you're working with a new designer who deals with each project from scratch, and the system is to have one designer who says, "This is what we do."

In practice, the flow is this: you export an output that you like as a project archive, you choose to create design systems on the main screen, you download the file you downloaded, and if you have logo/script type/market assets, you start production.

What comes out is a whole document with color palettes, typography, content principles, visual transformations and rules of motion, which means businesses pay the agency thousands of dollars.

A small tactic for color palettes: instead of making up colors from zero, use the current, compatible palettes that exist, which work, like Coolors, but the best result is to get a flat palette.

Make sure you get the system in one file; the actual value is portable.

Level 4: Spreading the system all over your business

It's the most common waste to build a design system and only use it on one site. It can work in your presentations, your e-mails, your bidding files, your social media visuals.

At this level, "prepare the sponsorship presentation," "design the welcome e-mail," "develop the color-tipography matching of this system," all of the requests are fed from the same system and the brand is consistent. It's no longer unusual for a single-shot presentation to get the color scheme right.

Again iteration is valid: you sit the template with corrections such as "let the color band be the same height on each slide" and "No sentence crosses two lines" and then that pattern is permanent.

Level 5: Taking power from the outside

So far, the tool can only reproduce what it sees. You start producing your own visuals and videos at level five: logo, special illustration, background video, character visuals.

The logic here is divided: **Claude as design intelligence, and the visual production tool works as a production engine. Claude thinks better about what to want, and he describes the visual model. When you connect these two with each other through the command line and you input your design system, the images that come out belong to your brand, the stock visual sense disappears.

Level 6: Activation

Add movement to level six static design: HTML animations, parts that react to shifting, 3B objects.

It is possible to get an animation that works with a single request, such as, "Make an HTML animation about how habits change over time." They can be buried on the website, can be used in content, can have a reward screen in application.

The movement is a major factor in a page's sense of artificial intelligence, and it feels alive, but when it's overrated, it exhausts the page in the first second.

Level 7: Real application

The final level design is no longer visual; behind it is a working application with a database, user registration and session. The design system on Claude Design's side combines with the development of Claude Code side, and a service like Supabase takes over the data side.

The thing that makes it easier here is to use the "agent skill: When you upload a talent file that tells the model how Supabase works, it stops predicting the model, it really knows the infrastructure. The registration form, the input screen and the control panel can come out on one request.

It's a small but everyone's hang-up: an e-mail confirmation in a newly installed recording stream is supposed to be open, so your first entry attempt fails. Turn it back on before you close it on in the test phase.

Also question the security side at this level: run database consultants and check line level security gaps and whether the leaked password protection is closed. The design is good, its authorization is easy and dangerous to create an open application.

Three expensive mistakes in level-jumping

I've had three mistakes in my students and my own business over the years, and it's costing all three of them time, and it's easy to avoid all three.

You set up the system from a generic output.** You set up the design system at level three, but in input you give an ordinary design at level one. The result is: you make regularity permanent, and now every production fits it. Get a printout that you really like before you set up the system.

The rule of level two was not to end it in one shot. If you go up without that habit, you make the same mistake as the more expensive cars in the upper levels.

To forget to export the system.** To build the design system and leave it in the working environment is the most annoying loss. In order for the system to be fully portable, you have to have it in one file so that you can take it to other projects, other tools, and other customer jobs.

There's also a silent error: "Don't know which level you're at.** Use the tools of level five and not have the system of level three, and the visuals produced don't match. First, secure the substep.

What level should you stay on?

You don't have to go all seven levels.

  • If you're making a few visuals a month, it's enough.
  • If you have a brand and you produce repetitive printouts, it's where you get the real income, where you get the quickest investment.
  • ** 5-6** Means something to people who produce content and do customer work.
  • ** Level 7** If you really have a product to go on the air, go ahead, or you'll get a load of maintenance.

And also a cost warning: multistep, critical flow in the upper levels is eating serious tokens. Use them not in every job, but in patterns you can use over and over again.

Questions that are often asked

I don't know the design, can I still use it?

Yes, but "don't know what you want" and "don't know" are different things. The vehicle draws for you, can't decide. Learning to collect references will bring you to the second level alone to describe what you like and what you like.

How long does it take to build a design system?

If you have a printout that you like, the first version comes out in minutes, but you really need a couple of laps of corrections to get it to sit down, and after an hour of investment, it comes back in every production.

Don't they always look alike?

The purpose of the design system is exactly this consistency. The diversity you want is not the system itself, but the variations within: different patterns within the same palette, different compositions with the same typography.

Can I use the design I produce commercially?

You can use the printout you're producing, but notice the design you're referring to. Replicating the visual identity of a brand is different; the second prevents you from building both the legal risk and your own brand.

In a nutshell

What makes a difference in Claude Design is not using the model better, but building the system at the first level. The first level thinks the vehicle is incompetent; the third level is getting a completely different print from the same vehicle. The only difference is that you once sat down and built your design system.
