When Is Gemini 4 Carbon Coming? Who Can Use It?
6 min read

Right now only a group of cyber defenders selected by Google can use Gemini 4 Carbon; there is no general release date. Carbon does not appear in the Gemini app, the Gemini API or the subscriptions page. Google says "as soon as possible" but gives no day. I explained what the model is in What Is Gemini 4 Carbon?; here I look at one question: when, and for whom?
This is a news and guide post; I have not tried the model because I cannot reach Carbon. The picture below is as of November 1, 2026 and may change fast, so at the end I also say where to check for yourself. Sources are at the end.
Where things stand (November 1, 2026)
| Route | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fairwind Program | Open, selected cyber defenders | Google says it started in announcement week; additional trusted partners next. The Fairwind page still mentions only Argon |
| Gemini app | Not available | Google's subscriptions page lists only Argon for Pro and Ultra |
| Gemini API | Not available | No changelog entry for Carbon, no model ID published. The price was announced, but you cannot use it at that price |
| Antigravity | No announcement | Google's Carbon post does not mention Antigravity |
| Routing platforms | Not available | Gateways such as Eden AI list Argon and do not list Carbon yet |
Google's own wording points one way: Carbon goes first to a group of cyber defenders, then to additional trusted partners through Fairwind; after gathering feedback and iterating on guardrails it will reach developers, businesses and consumers "as soon as possible." There is no date, no plan name and no product name (app, Antigravity, API).
When could it arrive?
Google has not given a date, so there is no firm answer. The only precedent we have is Argon's timeline:
- September 30: Argon opened only to cyber defenders in Fairwind.
- October 13: It opened to Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app. According to the Gemini API changelog,
gemini-4-argonwent generally available (GA) the same day.
So with Argon it took 13 days from Fairwind to general access. This is my interpretation: if the same gap repeated for Carbon, it would land around November 10. But Google has not said that, it presents Carbon as its strongest model in cyber, and it says it is still gathering feedback on guardrails. It could be quicker, or much later; I am not forecasting a date. Do not plan around a single day; watch the pages below.
Who gets it when it arrives?
We do not know. Google did not say which subscription plans or products will be covered. Argon's sequence could serve as a reference:
- Fairwind (cyber defenders)
- Google AI Pro and Ultra in the Gemini app
- Pro and Ultra in Antigravity (on Pro, with a separate, weekly-only quota for Argon)
- Paying developers on the API
It is not written anywhere that Carbon will follow the same order. Free users were left out with Argon; there is no announcement of free access for Carbon. On price, Google announced an intro rate of $2 per million input tokens and $10 for output (then $4 and $20), but there is no separate price for consumer subscriptions.
Fairwind: who can get in right now?
The Fairwind page does not currently mention Carbon; it only describes Argon. Carbon's terms may differ. This is how the page reads today:
- Priority: Governments and national cyber authorities, critical infrastructure operators such as healthcare, telecom, energy and finance, core technology platforms, and academic labs doing defensive benchmarking.
- How to apply: The page shows no form; it says "contact your Cloud account team." If you are not a Cloud customer it points you to the getting-started documentation. (In my Argon access post I mentioned an application form; the page appears to have changed since, and I have corrected that post.)
- Terms: User verification and phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication, access controls, access limited to internal cybersecurity, incident response or penetration testing teams, and a record of employee access. Access cannot be shared, redistributed or sold.
- Permitted work: Authorized threat simulation, reverse engineering, and malware analysis for defensive or academic research.
- Vetting: Google runs background checks on applicants and says it will respond to eligible partners "as soon as we can"; it gives no timeline.
If you are an individual developer, this route is not for you; applications are for organizations. I described it in the Fairwind section of the Argon access post.
What can you do while you wait?
- Use Argon. According to Google's subscriptions page, the model listed for Pro and Ultra today is Argon. You can reach it in the Gemini app and in Antigravity, and on the API its model ID is
gemini-4-argon. - Measure your own tasks. When Carbon opens, you run the same tasks and compare. I looked at the numbers in the Carbon, Argon, Opus 5.5 and Astra comparison; whatever you learn from your own task is worth more than that table.
- Watch three places: Google's Gemini subscriptions page (which model is written for which plan), the Gemini API changelog (when Carbon's model ID appears there it has reached the API; that is my inference) and Google's blog.
Around a new, restricted model, "download Gemini 4 Carbon," "use it free" and "early access" pages show up. Close any page outside Google's own domains that asks you to download an installer or sign in with your Google account. Offers selling shared "API keys" or "Fairwind accounts" also fall under the prohibited uses.
