Our third day in Bangkok was spent visiting one of the city's newest and most striking landmarks: the giant seated Buddha at Wat Paknam. Officially known as Phra Buddha Dhammakaya Thepmongkol, this golden statue can be seen from many parts of Bangkok and has quickly become one of the most recognizable silhouettes in the city's skyline.

General Facts About the Statue

The statue stands at an impressive 69 meters tall and weighs around 740 tons. It is considered one of the largest seated bronze Buddha statues in the world. Thanks to its golden exterior, it draws attention from far away, but the real impact hits when you get close. The scale is something that no photo or video can fully capture; you have to stand beneath it to understand just how massive it is.

The Story Behind Its Construction

What makes this statue especially interesting is that it is surprisingly new. Construction began in 2017, and after roughly 4 years of work, the statue was completed during the pandemic. So while Bangkok is full of centuries-old temples, this is a structure that was essentially just finished. Despite its youth, it has already claimed a place in the city's skyline and become a true landmark.

The First Encounter

Seeing the statue in person is a completely different experience. Its golden surface glows under the sun, and despite its enormous size, the seated posture gives off a sense of calm and grandeur. The surrounding area is spacious, allowing you to view the statue from many different angles. The expression on the Buddha's face, despite the giant scale, somehow brings a strange sense of peace. It was another reminder that some things simply cannot be appreciated properly through a screen.

Wat Paknam Temple

The giant Buddha is, as the name suggests, part of Wat Paknam temple. Wat Paknam is one of Bangkok's oldest Buddhist temples and is also known as the center of the Phra Dhammakaya tradition. While the new statue is by far the most eye-catching addition, the temple itself is well worth exploring. Its large grounds, decorated buildings, and peaceful atmosphere offer a quiet escape from the city's intensity.

A New Icon in the Skyline

In just a few years, the giant Buddha at Wat Paknam has become visible from many parts of Bangkok. Rising into the sky with its golden silhouette, it represents a beautiful blend of modern Bangkok and traditional Buddhism, showing that both can coexist. It would not be wrong to say that the statue has brought a fresh energy to a city that is already known as the city of temples.

Location

Wat Paknam is located in the Phra Pradaeng district, slightly outside central Bangkok. Still, it is fairly easy to reach by public transport or taxi.

Final Thoughts

The giant Buddha was without a doubt the highlight of our third day in Bangkok. At 69 meters tall, it fully deserves its place among the city's most impressive structures. Even though it is a modern construction, it has already blended into the soul of the city. If you ever find yourself in Bangkok, I would definitely recommend adding this statue to your list, alongside the classic temples.
